Where The Top Songs Came From

Kicking things off with a touch of mystery is “Super Maramu 2000” by SLOUCHO, championed by Resident Advisor, the online music magazine known for underground electronic gems. The song is a club-ready track, featuring drums that complement a Latin-bass rhythm, showcasing Sloucho’s distinctive and infectious vocal chops.

Pitchfork, the arbiter of all things indie, threw its weight behind “Waterworks” by 1010benja. The acclaimed singer-songwriter from Kansas City has finally released his first album, and it’s a beautiful collection of hybrid pop and R&B songs like this one.

KEXP brought us the pop anthem “Ocean” by Ghostly Kisses. The track features mixolydian harmony and a UK Garage feel, enhanced by Oli Bayston’s contributions. It explores vocal textures and liberative themes, reminiscent of tracks by Lorde and Taylor Swift.

A user-submitted gem took the #4 spot with “Kimbara” by Barry Can’t Swim. It is an irresistibly catchy, club-ready track, a surefire summer hit filled with vibrant horns, captivating vocal samples, and exuberant energy that crescendos into a moment of ecstatic euphoria.

Indie rock veterans Blitzen Trapper returned with “Cosmic Backseat Education,” a track shared by another user. Fans can likely expect a classic Blitzen Trapper experience with their signature blend of storytelling and innovative sounds.

TIDAL threw a curveball with “Hey Girl!!!” by eleven1.1, the latin singer whose touch is bringing something new to the scene with his sophisticated, smooth, and spatial style.

Another user submission, “BLACK COUNTRY GOTHIC” by BIG SPECIAL, reached #7 in the Top 10 Songs of May 2024 chart. The song covers all the expected topics from a band committed to championing working-class music and poetry. From the yearning for fame to the pressures of capitalism and wealth inequality.

A familiar name graces the chart with Kodak Black’s “Stressed Out” shared by YouTube at #8. The rapper known for his introspective lyrics and smooth flow return with a song reflecting on everything that’s been plaguing his mind lately.

Juno Download, the online music store known for its vast selection of electronic music, brings us “Lobster Telephone” by Peggy Gou, a retro-styled technicolor deep house track named after the renowned Salvador Dali sculpture.

Rounding out the chart is Pandora with Elvie Shane and his “First Place,” a country song in collaboration with Little Big Town which will surely become the anthem for summer road trips, blending Shane’s vocals with the harmonic richness of Little Big Town’s signature sound.
