Where The Top Songs Came From

YouTube was back on the podium last month, this time at number one with Skepta’s rap anthem “Tony Montana.” This grime banger brings the heat, referencing the iconic Scarface character with a lot of bravado and some slick wordplay.

Seattle’s KEXP brought us to “repeat to fade” by bad tuner. This shoegaze dream-pop track builds on layers of fuzzy guitars and hazy vocals, creating a soundscape that’s both melancholic and beautiful.

Australian radio station triple j made it to the podium with the return of Pond and their “(I’m) Stung” . The track is the second single released from their upcoming album and it is a catchy indie song packed with cool riffs.

A user-submitted track, “Strawberry Moon” by Arab Strap, reached the #4 spot in the Top 10 Songs of April 2024 chart. Here, the Scottish band known for their dark sound sheds its bleakness for a more personal approach. Backed by a surprisingly danceable Afrobeat groove, the song explores mental and physical struggles with raw honesty.

Claptone, the mysterious deep house producer, shared “Wanna Feel Something” by CASSIMM which reached #5. This soulful house track is all about yearning for connection, with its smooth vocals and driving bassline guaranteed to get you moving.

Deezer brought the heat with “Remission” by Kasablanca, landing at #6. This dark, driving techno track is perfect for late-night adventures, with its pulsating synths and hypnotic vocals creating an atmosphere that’s both intense and strangely comforting.

Soundcloud continues to be a breeding ground for fresh sounds. This month, Vincent Mason’s “Hell is a Dancefloor” clawed its way to #7 in the Top 10 Songs of April 2024. Despite the edgy title, this song is a heart-wrenching country ballad. Mason’s soulful vocals and lyrics tell the story of a heartbreak witnessed on a crowded dance floor, making it a relatable anthem for anyone who’s ever nursed a broken heart.

Gerry Read climbed the charts with his deep house gem “Not Quite There Yet” via Bandcamp. At the forefront of the UK deep house/garage scene since 2010, the track showcases his signature blend of funky, warm vibes that continue to set him apart.

Qobuz, the high-fidelity streaming service, isn’t just about pristine audio quality. They also have a knack for finding catchy tunes. Maude Latour’s “Too Slow” is a prime example, landing at #9. This infectious pop track with its sassy lyrics and playful melodies is perfect for those moments when you need a confidence boost.

Remember Napster? Apparently, good music never goes out of style. Mk.gee’s “Dream Police” proves that point, taking the tenth spot on the chart. This alternative R&B track with its smooth vocals and soulful melodies evokes a dreamlike atmosphere. The subtle electronic flourishes add a modern twist, making it a captivating listen.
